Asante Kotoko are unbeaten in games in which striker Yakubu Mohammed registered a goal.
The former Ashantigold attacker endured a topsy-turvy first season with the Porcupine Warriors but still managed to score six times finishing as the club’s second highest goalscorer behind Sadick Adams, owner of 10 goals.
But the good fortune that comes with Yakubu Mohamed is that his club never gets defeated if only he will score a goal.
The bulky forward scored a brace on his league debut as Kotoko won 2-1 over Liberty Professionals in Kumasi last year. He went on to score the winning goal in Obuasi for his team as Yakubu punished his former employers in a rescheduled fixture played on Monday as the original game was rained-off when the game was 1-1.
In the Bolga All Stars 1 Kotoko 1 game in Tamale, it was still Yak who scored Kotoko’s goal and in the 2-1 home win against All Stars Yakubu was there again to register his fifth goal of the season.
He completed his scoring in the season against Bolga All Stars at the Babaya as Kotoko won 2-1 with Yakubu adding his name to the scorers list.
This season Yakubu – who spent time in the South Africa league and a short spell in Morocco and was the most unpopular figure at the club with many calling for his release is rather the leading top scorer for Paa Kwesi Fabin’s side on two goals against CARA Brazzaville and WAFA. His penalty won the CARA game Kotoko then managed by Stevn Polack after Sadick Adams, Amos Frimpong and Baba Mahama had all missed from the spot in the same game. Yakubu came of the bench in the 85th minute to clinch the winner for his team.
For the first time that Kotoko scored a goal on WAFA’a artifical pitch the man to realize that feat was Yakubu Mohammed increasingly proving to be decisive this 2018 season.
Yakubu represents perseverance and hard work. Looking at the amount of boos and whistles and discouraging songs sang against him by his own fans last season at the Babayara clearly shows the striker is a professional with big heart.
In total the striker has 8 goals across two seasons in over 20 starts and on Sunday thanks to his goal at Sogakope he is expected to lead the lines against Inter Allies and indeed he deserves to start again.
