Ghana defender Alexander Djiku is gearing up for the new season with Turkish giants Fenerbahce, having prepared with new coach Jose Mourinho in the club’s final pre-season friendly against Hull City on July 18.
As Fenerbahce prepares to kick off their campaign next week with a UEFA Champions League qualifier against Swiss side Lugano, Djiku has set his sights on reaching the group stage of Europe’s elite competition.
“Everyone’s common goal is to reach the group stage in the Champions League. We have three rounds to pass. We will be ready for the Lugano match, and of course, we want to start the season with a victory in our first official match,” Djiku told Fenerbahce TV.
The 29-year-old defender, who had a successful first season with the club, is aware of the challenges ahead but remains confident that his team can overcome them. Fenerbahce will have to navigate three stages to qualify for the Champions League group stage.
After their Champions League qualifier, Fenerbahce will begin their Super Lig campaign in August with a match against Adana Demirspor.
