Asante Kotoko striker Kwame Opoku has expressed mixed emotions over the club’s 2024/25 campaign, admitting disappointment at missing out on the Ghana Premier League title but celebrating their MTN FA Cup triumph as a crucial consolation.
Speaking to 3Sports after Kotoko’s 2-1 victory over Golden Kick FC in the FA Cup final, Opoku described the win as vital to salvaging the season and rewarding the team’s efforts.
“We can’t go trophyless for all the hard work we’ve put in, so I’m very happy,” Opoku said. “We are Asante Kotoko—we can’t go trophyless. We were supposed to win the league, but unfortunately, we didn’t. So we had to do something for the club, and I’m happy we won this FA Cup.”
The 25-year-old forward was the star of the final, netting both goals for the Porcupine Warriors, including a late penalty to secure the club’s 10th FA Cup title at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.
Despite the team’s league setback, Opoku had a strong individual campaign, scoring nine goals and providing two assists in 17 league appearances.
With the club now qualified for the CAF Confederation Cup, Opoku says his focus has already shifted to next season, where he hopes to lead Kotoko to reclaim the Premier League crown.
“The target is the league next season. We’ve done well this year, but we have to do better,” he added.
