One of the most eagerly anticipated fixtures in the group stage of the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt is Ghana’s clash with reigning champions Senegal.
Despite the heavy expectations and hype surrounding the match, Black Satellites head coach Desmond Ofei is approaching it with calm professionalism.
“It’s a big match, no doubt,” Ofei acknowledged. “But we’ll treat it like any other: with respect, focus, and confidence.”
This approach highlights Ofei’s key leadership strength—emotional balance. While fully aware of the significance of playing against Senegal, his primary focus remains on the internal preparation of his team, ensuring discipline, tactical execution, and mental strength.
“We’ll execute our tactical plan, stay disciplined, and be fearless in key moments,” Ofei added.
The rivalry between Ghana and Senegal at the youth level is steeped in pride, power, and history. However, Ofei is determined to avoid the drama often surrounding this fixture, viewing it as just another tactical challenge in a larger campaign. His emphasis is on maturity and approach, rather than getting caught up in the emotions of the occasion.
This measured mentality could prove to be Ghana’s greatest asset. While others may be overwhelmed by the magnitude of the match, Ofei’s team is being conditioned to remain grounded, focused, and efficient when it counts the most.
In addition to Senegal, Ghana will face DR Congo and the Central African Republic in Group C, with the goal of securing qualification for the 2025 U-20 World Cup in Chile.
