Former Premier League striker Darren Bent has praised Thomas Partey for his remarkable display during Arsenal’s 2-2 draw against Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium on October 27, 2024.
Playing in an unfamiliar right-back position, the Ghanaian international showcased his skills throughout the match, despite concerns over his ability to handle Liverpool’s attacking threats in his new role.
On talkSPORT, Bent emphasized Partey’s defensive prowess, particularly in neutralizing Liverpool winger Luis Diaz, which ultimately led to Diaz’s substitution by coach Arne Slot. “Thomas Partey played like old-fashioned fullbacks; when the first challenge came, they went wide. He did that on Luis Diaz, and it’s almost like he went down. They started putting the ball over the top because Partey is not the quickest,” the former Aston Villa striker noted.
“But I think it worked, and that’s why they took Diaz off. After a while, he just couldn’t get the better of Partey, and that was one area where I thought he was outstanding and exceptional,” he added.
As Arsenal prepares to face Newcastle United on Saturday at St. James’ Park, Partey will be looking to maintain his spot in the starting lineup.
