Medeama SC have never won the Ghana Premier League in their young history but the Yellow and Mauves have two FA Cup trophies to show in their trophy cabinet but their failed 2020/21 season is a reminder of what they need to do if they really want to achieve bigger things.
The club of Moses Parker were humiliated 3-0 in the FA Cup semifinals by their former employee Samuel Boadu currently in charge of Hearts of Oak. That is the worse manner you would want to go out of the competition you have , not once but twice.
The club failed to make the Top 4 and the compensation they were looking forward to by reaching the FA Cup final did not materialize.
What next?
Player quality is not problem. They have Prince Opoku Agyemang, the veteran Ahmed Toure, Abass Mohammed, Tetteh Zutah, Kwadwo Asamoah, Rashi Nortey and the injured Justice Blay. These are fine players. Of course their goalkeeper Frank Boateng is not a reliable custodian and that has been evidently clear in the games that he started this season. An upgrade in that department would be needed for next season as Eric Ofori Antwi is almost out of the club.
To be honest with Yaw Preko. I do not think he is cut for the job considering how he finished the season. His audition was not impressive.
Boadu’s Medeama played better soccer. His Medeama teams were better organized and compact and that is what he is doing at Hearts of Oak. I did not see the progress in terms of the football when Preko and Yaw Acheampong came in.
Don’t get me wrong. I am not saying Samuel Boadu would have won the 2021 league if he had stayed in Tarkwa. No. Sometimes things just never work. Thomas Tuchel did not win the Champions League at PSG. He was fired. He goes to Chelsea and then wins it. So stuff like that happen in football but the most important thing is the demonstration of potentials. In two big games against Boadu’s Hearts of Oak, Preko’s Medeama were battered 5-0 on aggregate. That is a bitter pill for Parker and co to swallow and I do not see Preko in charge next season.
In sum, if Medeama are to reach greater height, they would need a better trainer who can get these wonderful group of players playing the solid football they used to play when Boadu was in charge.
