Former England striker Daniel Sturridge has pointed to the absence of Thomas Partey as a major reason behind Arsenal’s defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League semifinal first leg.
The Ghanaian midfielder missed the crucial clash at the Emirates Stadium due to suspension, having received a yellow card in the quarterfinal matchup against Real Madrid. His absence was deeply felt as the Gunners fell short in front of their home fans, denting their hopes of progressing to the final.
Without Partey’s strength, calmness under pressure, and driving presence in midfield, Arsenal found it difficult to gain control early on. They paid the price just four minutes into the game when Ousmane Dembélé converted a low cross from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to put PSG ahead.
Reflecting on the defeat, Sturridge emphasized how costly Partey’s suspension turned out to be. “Personally, the yellow card for Thomas Partey proved costly this leg. No Partey, no party!” he remarked after the match.
Partey, watching from the sidelines, appeared visibly disheartened by his inability to contribute on the pitch. At the final whistle, he made his way to the touchline to offer support and encouragement to his teammates.
Looking ahead, Arsenal can take comfort in the fact that Partey will be available for the return leg in Paris next week. His return could prove crucial as Mikel Arteta’s men aim to overturn the deficit and secure a spot in the final.
