Southampton manager Russell Martin offered praise for Ghanaian international Kamaldeen Sulemana following Southampton’s 3-0 loss to Liverpool in the FA Cup fifth round at Anfield.
Despite the defeat and Southampton’s elimination from the competition, Martin highlighted Sulemana’s positive aspects despite his missed opportunities.
Sulemana, making his first start since returning from a significant injury that sidelined him during Ghana’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations campaign, showcased glimpses of his talent but struggled to convert key chances against Liverpool.
Martin, while recognizing Sulemana’s overall contribution during his 58 minutes on the pitch, emphasized the need for improvement in the winger’s finishing.
“I thought he was great, but he should score. The next step for Kamaldeen is getting things right in the final third. Even when he had a run of games before he got injured, he only got three assists,” Martin remarked, pointing out Sulemana’s potential to capitalize on scoring opportunities.
Despite the missed chances, Martin expressed admiration for Sulemana’s discipline and contributions both on and off the ball, highlighting the winger’s talent and versatility within the team’s tactics.
“He has a lot of moments that should lead to more—he knows that. He is so talented. I thought he was great against Liverpool. He was so disciplined in his position and did a good job out of possession for the team. He had some amazing moments with the ball,” Martin added, reflecting on Sulemana’s performance.
