Real Madrid have been forced to deny a world-record bid for PSG and Brazil forward Neymar after Spanish broadcasters Television Espanola reported a €310m offer had been tabled by the Champions League winners.
TVE had initially stated that the LaLiga side were yet to receive a response from the French club, before changing the article following an official club statement.
The report appeared after the Brazilian had played a key role in his side advancing to the quarter-finals of the World Cup, scoring the opening goal against Mexico before a later effort was deflected into the path to substitute Roberto Firmino.
Real Madrid were keen to deny the reports, however, posting the following statement on their club website.
“In light of information broadcast tonight [Monday] by TVE regarding an alleged Real Madrid offer to PSG and their player Neymar, Real Madrid C. F. wishes to state that this information is absolutely untrue.
“Real Madrid has made no offer of any kind to PSG or the player.
“Real Madrid are surprised that the Spanish public television network would choose to broadcast entirely false information without anyone from the outlet having first contacted any of the parties concerned to corroborate the supposed information, which would have been quite easily discredited.”
Julen Lopetegui was hired as Zinedine Zidane’s successor in controversial circumstances ahead of the World Cup, and despite being unveiled during the tournament following his sacking as manager of the Spanish national team, it is still unclear what his plan for Los Blancos’ squad will be.
Neymar meanwhile will now prepare to face Belgium in the World Cup quarter-final after Roberto Martinez’s side came from two goals down to beat Japan 3-2 in an instant classic.
