Ghana midfielder Kwame Bonsu has won the 2019/20 Tunisia league title with Esperance Sportive de Tunis on Sunday night with three games to spare after a 1-1 home draw against 9th placed SC Chebba during Week 23 of the league season.
The Week 23 encounter took place behind closed doors due to the Covid-19 at the Rades stadium and Bonsu started the match before he was substituted at the start of the second half.
The away side scored first at the half hour mark before Algerian Abdelkader Bedrane equalized for Esperance five minutes later.
The 28-year old Bonsu now joins an exclusive list that includes former Hearts of Lions striker Sadat Bukari, Moussa Narry, Harrison Afful and Seidu Salifu as the recent Ghanaian footballers to have won the Tunisia top-flight league competition.
This title success represents the first major silverware for the former Asante Kotoko midfielder whose top performances in the 2018/19 CAF Confederation Cup attracted interest from the Tunisian giants.
Kwame joined the four-times CAF Champions League winners for a transfer fee of 150 000 USD in July 2019, the payment of which generated controversy between the two African sides.
Kotoko were indebted to Esperance an amount of 180 000 USD. This debt represented a FIFA fine slapped on Ghanaian player Emmanuel Clottey who breached his Esperance contract to illegally signed for the Porcupine Warriors in 2015 and for that reason Kotoko were held jointly an severally liable but that debt remained unpaid till the transfer business between the two clubs.
In the end the Kumasi-based side in turn paid 30 000 USD to Esperance and a further 15 000 USD to FIFA but Esperance decided to waive the five percent interest they were eligible to receive from Kotoko and now Bonsu has helped them to clinch their 30th league title in his first season.
