Nations Football Club has officially explained its decision to walk off the pitch and abandon their penultimate Ghana Premier League fixture against Basake Holy Stars, citing a series of alarming incidents that they say compromised the integrity of the match and endangered the safety of their personnel.
In a detailed statement released on Sunday, June 1, 2025, Nations FC outlined five key reasons behind their dramatic protest, which took place midway through the second half while they trailed 1-0 in a tense title-chasing encounter at the Crosby Awuah Memorial Stadium.
Key Issues Cited by Nations FC
1. Poor Officiating
The club sharply criticized the standard of refereeing, labeling it as “extremely poor” and below expectations. According to Nations FC, the decisions made by the officiating team significantly affected the fairness and credibility of the match and raised broader questions about the integrity of the competition.
2. Security Concerns and Physical Assault
Perhaps most alarmingly, Nations FC revealed that their club president, Mr. Divine Kyei Boadu, and Chairman Dr. Kwame Kyei were physically assaulted by supporters of the home team. The club described the environment as hostile and unsafe, highlighting the dangers faced by their officials, technical staff, and players during the incident.
3. Inadequate Security Presence
Nations FC stated that pre-match agreements had stipulated the deployment of 70 police officers to ensure security. However, only about 20 officers were reportedly present at the venue, leaving the visiting team feeling vulnerable and exposed amid rising tensions.
4. Disrespect to Traveling Fans
The statement also noted that several Nations FC supporters were denied entry into the stadium despite holding valid tickets. The club labeled this act as discriminatory and contrary to the principles of fair play and sportsmanship.
5. Media Obstruction
Nations FC claimed that their accredited club videographer, who had full authorization from the Ghana Football Association (GFA), was blocked from filming the match. They allege this obstruction was carried out with the backing of both Basake Holy Stars supporters and officials — and with the apparent support of the Match Commissioner.
Call for Action
In the closing section of their statement, Nations FC strongly condemned the incidents and called on the Ghana Football Association and all relevant stakeholders to launch a full investigation. They urged the GFA to implement disciplinary and regulatory measures to uphold fairness, safety, and dignity across the league.
“The safety, dignity, and fairness owed to every club, official, and supporter must be upheld at all times,” the statement read.
GFA Yet to Respond
As of now, the Ghana Football Association has not released an official response to the club’s claims. The abandoned match has sparked widespread debate, especially as Nations FC currently sit atop the league table and were on the verge of clinching their first-ever Premier League title.
The league’s governing body is expected to meet in the coming days to assess the situation, and the outcome could have major ramifications for the title race, as well as the broader credibility of the competition.
