Ghanaian international Mohammed Salisu expressed his delight after scoring his first UEFA Champions League goal, helping AS Monaco secure a 2-2 draw against Dinamo Zagreb. The Black Stars defender played a crucial role in the match as Monaco came from behind to earn a valuable point in Croatia.
Salisu, a former Southampton player, found the back of the net with a well-timed header off a cross from Maghnes Akliouche, marking his debut goal in the prestigious competition. His standout performance earned him a place in the UEFA Champions League Team of the Week. After the match, Salisu shared his joy on Instagram, saying, “Great effort from the lads yesterday. Let’s keep pushing. First Champions League goal.”
Dinamo Zagreb initially took control of the game, with Peter Sucic scoring just before halftime from a pass by Martin Baturina. The Croatian side doubled their lead in the 66th minute, increasing the pressure on Monaco. However, Salisu’s goal sparked a comeback, reducing the deficit and shifting the momentum back in Monaco’s favor.
In the final moments, Denis Zakaria converted a penalty to bring the match level, securing the draw for Monaco and keeping their Champions League hopes alive. This marked Salisu’s second appearance in the tournament, following his debut against Barcelona last month.
Salisu has made a strong impression since the start of the 2024/25 season, aiming to make up for time lost due to injury last year. He is also expected to feature in Ghana’s squad for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualification matches against Sudan next week.
