Merseyside Police have arrested a 47-year-old man after Ghanaian winger Antoine Semenyo was racially abused during Bournemouth’s Premier League match against Liverpool on Friday.
The incident happened in the first half of the game, which Liverpool won 4-2. Semenyo, who scored twice for Bournemouth, reported to referee Anthony Taylor that he had heard racist remarks from a supporter. The match was briefly paused while officials, coaches, and captains discussed the situation before play resumed.
Police confirmed the arrest on Saturday, saying the man is being held on suspicion of a racially motivated public order offence.
Following the incident, Semenyo shared a message on Instagram thanking fans for their support. The Premier League has also announced that it is opening an investigation.
