Manchester City’s hopes of an unbeaten Premier League season came crashing down in style on Sunday as Liverpool beat Pep Guardiola’s title favourites 4-3 at Anfield.
Pep Guardiola’s side had no answer to a second-half onslaught from Liverpool, who pressed the League leaders and made them pay with three goals in nine minutes.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain opened the scoring with a fine 25-yard effort after nine minutes, though Leroy Sane beat Loris Karius at his near post all too easily to send the sides in level at the interval.
City came out firing in the second half, but it was Jurgen Klopp’s men who made the breakthrough with Roberto Firmino holding off John Stones before chipping Ederson after 59 minutes.
Sadio Mane then missed a golden chance to make it 3-1 as he hit the post with three team-mates free, but the Senegal star soon made amends as he lashed the ball into the top corner to put Liverpool two goals ahead 61 minutes into a breathless clash.
And Liverpool were three goals ahead seven minutes later as Ederson raced out of his box only to clear to Mohamed Salah, who cut the ball out before chipping the stranded goalkeeper from 40 yards.
Bernardo Silva scored City’s second goal with seven minutes to go to leave the Anfield faithful slightly nervy – and Ilkay Gundogan’s 91st-minute left Klopp apoplectic – but Guardiola’s men ran out of steam as Liverpool ended City’s hopes of matching Arsenal’s ‘Invincibles’ team of the 2003-04 season.
