Asante Kotoko legend Malik Jabir has warned the management of the club not to attempt firing Coach C.K. Akonnor.
He believes sacking Akonnor will deepen the club’s woes.
The former Black Meteors trainer who commands maximum respect for his achievement, both as a player and a coach of the club argues that sacking a Akonnor who is gradually building a winsome team barely six months after his appointment wouldn’t make any sense.
Kotoko, failed to make it to the quarter finals of the Confederation Cup after losing 2-1 to Zesco United in Ndola last Sunday.
Widespread local media reports in Kumasi on Tuesday suggested the former Hearts of Oak gaffer could be axed.
While a session of supporters are divided on one front, the club’s top hierarchy appears to be unclear on the long-term future of the coach.
But Speaking to Ashh FM in Kumasi, Malik Jabir cautioned the management to maintain the coach and rather revamp the current team in their bid to assemble a fearsome squad in future.
“Sacking the coach won’t be the solution to the problems in the team but we must prepare and build a formidable team for the future,” he said.
“The management and the technical team should tackle the defensive problems because it affected the team from the start of the competition instead of thinking about sacking the coach,” he added.
Despite not football activities in Ghana, Akonnor managed to secure a group stage qualification in a CAF club competition for the first time in 11 years.
