Chairman of the Black Stars management committee George Afriyie has dismissed the possibility of Los Angeles forward Latif Blessing switching nationalities from Ghana to the United States.
Afriyie who was key in the discovery of Blessing and played a major role in nurturing the player during his stint with Liberty Professionals believes the player’s motives are borne out of frustration with the lack of interest from the Black Stars and its handlers.
Earlier in the year Blessing, indicated that he would take up an offer to represent the United States if given a shot due to the lack of interest from Ghana.
“To play for Ghana is not my target at the moment because I have done whatever any player would have to do to be rewarded with a call-up but I have not received any good signs from the coach”.
“Currently, I’m focusing on my performance at my new club but I’m also ready to switch nationality and play for the USA. When they make an attempt to hand me the opportunity to represent them in the future, I will accept it with both hands,”
George Afryie insists Blessing won’t make the switch but needs to keep working harder to keep himself on the national team radar.
“I don’t think that Latif is going to switch nationalities.
“He is my son and I don’t think there is anything like that.
“Sometimes players get very frustrated because he is playing very well and so he thinks it is time to get a call-up to the Black Stars.
“Let us leave that to the coach because if the coach sees him in his plans he will definitely give him a call-up,” he stated.
The player himself has started the season on a positive note, registering his first goal of the season in Los Angeles’ 5 – 1 win over Real Salt Lake.
