Kwasi Owusu will be buried Saturday November 7th in his hometown of Nkoranza Nkwabeng in the Bono East region but his record of 9 goals in two games for the Black Stars of Ghana has stood for 51 years and still counting.
The finest of players like Abedi Pele, the great Tony Yeboah, Asamoah Gyan, Mattew Amoah and co have all tried to match this feat but they were miserable so far as breaking this huge record of Kwasi Owusu is concerned. 51 years , the record remains unbroken.
Who can shatter this big record anytime soon?
We have to go back to 17th August 1969 when this record was created. Ghana defeated Niger 6-0 in a 1970 AFCON qualifying match in Accra. Kwasi Owusu – who will be laid to rest tomorrow – scored 83 percent of those goals as he realized a 5-goal hat trick.
Niger thought that was enough but “The Powerhouse of Ghana football” was not done with the Francophone African football minnows. Ghana hammered their opponents in the return leg by 9-1 on 21st September 1969 and Owusu grabbed the headlines again by scoring 4 goals to make it 9 goals in two AFCON qualifying games against Niger. The legend started here.
It is 51 years now and no one has ever come close to this feat and perhaps this record may remain eternal.
At the tournament proper in Sudan 1970, Owusu scored 3 goals to be Ghana’s topscorer at the AFCON as the Black Stars finished 3rd and picked Silver medal.
