James Kwasi Appiah met with Asante Kotoko’s life patron, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, on Tuesday morning to discuss the possibility of becoming the club’s next coach.
While the exact purpose of the meeting has not been officially disclosed, it is rumored that the former Ghanaian coach could be appointed to a long-term contract with Asante Kotoko.
The club’s patron dissolved the entire management and board on Monday, June 3, following the expiration of their contracts. The former board, led by Dr. Kwame Kyei and CEO Nana Yaw Amponsah, has been summoned to the Manhyia Palace on Wednesday, July 5, to give an account of their tenure.
Earlier reports had suggested that Kwasi Appiah was in talks with the now-dissolved board of directors and management for a potential return to the club where he previously played and coached.
Kwasi Appiah is considered to have a strong connection with Asante Kotoko, having served as an assistant manager from 1992 to 1995 and then as head coach for the 1995/1996 season.
Asante Kotoko is currently without a coach following the dismissal of Burkinabe manager Seyduo Zerbo. In the interim, Abdul Gazale has taken charge as the interim manager.
According to reports from Kumasi-based Oyerepa FM, Kwasi Appiah visited the Manhyia Palace to engage in talks. The report also revealed that Appiah has accepted the offer to coach the club, as he could not turn down the request of Otumfuo.
It is believed that the club’s owner plans to offer Kwasi Appiah a long-term contract as part of his vision to change the club’s direction and establish a closer relationship between the team and the palace.
Throughout his esteemed career, Appiah enjoyed tremendous success at Asante Kotoko, winning 10 trophies, including seven Ghana Premier League titles, two FA Cup titles, and the African Champions League in 1983.
Most recently, he served as a coach at Kenpong Football Academy from 2021 to 2023.
