Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has revealed that it’s quite frustrating, Ghana is yet to win the Africa Cup of Nations for the past 35 years.
The Black Stars have been finalists nine times, winning the trophy on four occasions – 1963, 1965, 1978, and 1982 – while missing out on the ultimate in 1968, 1970, 1992, 2010, and 2015.
In a phone interview with Accra based Class FM, Asamoah Gyan said as the leader, it worries him a lot.
“Personally, I do worry a lot and as of now, I’m leading the team and it’s quite frustrating having this kind of quality players and not taking anything home. It’s frustrating but we will try to make sure we carry the cup home, although it’s very early to talk about winning the cup because we have a long way to go. We just have to be more composed to do what we do best, that is, win games and we’ll see what happens,” he stated.
“There is pressure on us because over 35 years, people back home are expecting the cup. We the players…we know what is at stake so the pressure is there but sometimes pressure brings the best out of you and that is what we are trying to do,”
Gyan, who is playing in his sixth Nations Cup, has bagged in 49 goals in 97 appearances for the Stars and is currently tied on 7 goals with Black Stars legend, Rev. Osei Kofi for the most goals scored at the Africa Cup of Nations.
