Asante Kotoko defender Samba Oneil is thrilled to be compared to his role model, Sergio Ramos, after starring in the Porcupine Warriors’ 2-1 victory over Hearts of Oak in the inaugural Democracy Cup at Accra Sports Stadium on Wednesday.
Oneil’s impressive performance earned him the Man of the Match award as Kotoko secured their third consecutive win over Hearts of Oak in the 2023-2024 season.
The Congolese defender expressed his excitement at being compared to the Spanish legend, saying: “I feel happy. Asante Kotoko is a big club and I was playing against Hearts of Oak which is also big, that’s why I wanted to show myself to Kotoko supporters that I’m here. I’m happy to hear people say that (compare me to Sergio Ramos) because Ramos is my model… so me too, I want to play like him.”
The win marks another significant victory for Kotoko, who have dominated their rivalry with Hearts of Oak this season. Justice Blay and Peter Amidu were the scorers for Kotoko in their Democracy Cup triumph.
As Kotoko look ahead to their European tour in preparation for the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League season, which begins on September 6, Oneil’s confidence is likely to boost the team’s morale. They will face DC United in Washington, USA as part of their pre-season preparations.
