Former Ghana star, Odartey Lamptey has opened the lid about how lack of education affected his carrier due to his inability to read and write.
After a successful juvenile tournament in Scotland a host of club came jostling for his signature including Steven Keshie’s Anderlecht.
“education was a big problem for me at that time I could not read I could write I was signing a document that affecting me that I did not know” the ex-player told Nabil Mufatwau on Joy News
“After the agreement we signed I went to training and Bigg Ron said ah, why you won’t come for your money and I said what kind of money I did not know the signing fee or whatever, me I know every month they have to pay my salary, so I gave them my account and the next day the money was sent into my account. A week later Caliendo (the agent) came he was furious he went there he went to them like he was coming for money and they said the money have been given to the player” …is not easy oo all because I could not read and write at that time”
Odartey lamptey also revealed that moving to England to play for Aston Villa was a wrong decision he made at the time that affected his carrier.
“going to England at time was a wrong decision very very decision” asked if he regrets going he responded “no regrets I think I was the first Ghanaian going there which I was very happy by then my type of play does not suit England at that time at that time it was hit and run so it was very difficult for me to stay” he further stated.
Asked how long the agent was taking his money he replied” if am not lying for four to five years of my carrier”
To avoid young footballers from going through such an ordeal, the player has since set up an academy to improve upon footballers’ education. The Glow Lamp Academy was set up by the player after he hanged his boots.
