Maxwell Hanson the center referee who was in charge of the chaotic game between B.A United and Real Tamale United at the Sunyani Coronation Park during Week 27 of the Division One League has said that he changed to his decision to award the away team a 40th minute penalty in other to avoid further attacks from the home fans.
Hanson was physically assaulted by the home fans for awarding what they deemed a dubious penalty in favor of the Tamale side.
“Instead of restarting the match with a penalty to the away team, I restarted with a drop ball to avoid attacks from the fans of the home team. This did not go down well with the supporters believed to be fans of the away team who also retaliated by throwing objects such as stones, sticks, sachet water and metallic objects onto the field of play.” Maxwell Hanson said in his official match report to the GFA.
“This also delayed play for about 15 minutes. The head of the military, players and technical team of the away team then appealed to the spectators believed to be fans of the away team which they complied and the match was restarted.” he added.
Meanwhile RTU have been declared winners of their cross-protest against the Apostles of Power Soccer. But Bofoakwa Tano continue to lead the standings in Zone One with 64 points after 29 games – two more points ahead of closest challengers RTU.
