Former Club Brugge midfielder Enock Adu Kofi shared his advice with compatriot Kingsley Sarfo, cautioning him against choosing to represent Ghana over Sweden – a country where Sarfo had spent the majority of his football career.
Adu Kofi, who also played in the Swedish League and for Malmo FF before Sarfo joined the same team, expressed disappointment at his inability to secure call-ups to the Black Stars despite his outstanding performances at the time.
Acknowledging this, he revealed advising Sarfo to opt for Sweden. However, the 28-year-old eventually accepted a call-up in 2017 under former Black Stars coach Kwesi Appiah, participating in a crucial World Cup qualifier against Uganda.
“I remember Kingsley Sarfo came to me and asked, ‘Senior do you think I should play for Ghana or Sweden?’ I advised him to play for Sweden, but I didn’t know why he played for (Ghana),” he shared with Pure FM.
Adu Kofi’s advice stemmed from persistent rejection by the Black Stars technical team, despite his impressive performances with Danish giants FC Nordsjaelland. The 33-year-old expressed regret for choosing Ghana over an approach from the Denmark national team and hoped his compatriot wouldn’t face a similar disappointment.
“Yeah, Denmark tried, but I was young at that time (I only wanted to play for Ghana), and I was at my peak. I was playing Champions League and Europa League, so I was very confident that something like that (playing for Ghana) would happen, but…”
“Sometimes I get worried, but because I feel that I deserve it.”
