Ghana coach Charles Kwablan Akonnor has explained why he handed debut senior call-up to Germany-based Jamie Leweling as Ghana play Sudan next month during Day 3 and 4 of the 2021 AFCON Qulaification tournament.
Ghana lead Group C on six points after beating South Africa and Sao Tome and Principe when Kwesi Appiah was in charge of the Black Stars.
The 19-year old midfielder has scored a goal in 5 matches this season in the Second Bundesliga competition for Greuther Furth. However he is yet to feature in Germany’s top-tier league competition of the Bundesliga but Akonnor has enough reasons why he selected the teenager.
“He is growing very fast. He just got a chance from the second team and now he is with the first team. He’s been a player I believe is a hope for the future” Akonnor said.
“He is one of the guys that we can have because he’s young, 19 years of age and he has had the chance to play for the German national team and so we are looking at how we can also get him on board to also help us in the future. He’s somebody I believe if not today, he’s going to be the hope for our future and that’s why he’s here.” the Black Stars head coach said on Friday.
