Gold Stars FC sealed a historic Ghana Premier League title in emphatic style, thrashing Accra Lions 4-0 at a jubilant Duns Park on Sunday to complete a remarkable rise to the top.
The win secured the Miners’ first-ever league crown, just four years after their promotion to the top flight, capping off a fairytale campaign. It also sent Accra Lions crashing into relegation, a dramatic fall from grace just one season after finishing runners-up.
Abdul Farouk Amoaful got the party started in the 4th minute, firing home the opener to send the home crowd into early celebration. Kelvin Oppong doubled the lead in the 19th minute, before second-half goals from Samuel Atta Kumi (73′) and Frank Amankwah (90′) wrapped up a dominant display that saw Gold Stars finish the season with a three-point cushion at the top.
Accra Lions Relegated After Collapse
The defeat confirmed a miserable end to the season for Accra Lions, who slumped to 15th place. Despite glimpses of promise earlier in the campaign, they couldn’t escape the drop and will play Division One football next season.
Nations FC Stumble at Final Hurdle
Title contenders Nations FC, who entered the final day level on points with Gold Stars, saw their dreams dashed with a shock 2-0 home defeat to Heart of Lions at the Dr. Kwame Kyei Sports Complex.
Goals from Samuel Boamah Quansah (18′) and Asante Sedorf (72′) silenced the home crowd and handed the visitors a deserved win. Nations FC, despite topping the table for large parts of the season, finished second and now await a pending judicial decision which could still impact the final standings.
Kotoko Edge Hearts for Fourth as Both Giants Miss Out
Asante Kotoko were beaten 3-1 by debutants Vision FC at the Nii Adjei Kraku II Sports Complex, but still pipped arch-rivals Hearts of Oak to fourth place on head-to-head.
An own goal by Vision’s Lord Xorse Kudzinya gave Kotoko an early lead, but the hosts responded with a brace from Frank Duku and a goal by Edmund Asante to hand the Porcupines their first defeat under interim boss Abdul Karim Zito.
Hearts of Oak, meanwhile, ended their campaign with a 1-0 home win over dethroned champions FC Samartex 1996 at the Accra Sports Stadium. Konadu Yiadom’s 57th-minute strike handed the Phobians their first-ever league win over Samartex in Accra, but it wasn’t enough to finish above Kotoko, who held the advantage in head-to-head results.
Medeama Falter, Chelsea Stun in Tarkwa
Defending champions Medeama SC closed out a disappointing season with a 2-1 loss at home to Berekum Chelsea. Vincent Klu Adjei gave Chelsea the lead before Kingsley Braye leveled for the Mauve and Yellows. However, ex-Medeama striker Kofi Ansu Patrick delivered the killer blow five minutes from time.
Medeama ended the season in 8th place, while Chelsea finished 12th.
Aduana Finish Strong, Holy Stars Survive Debut Campaign
Aduana FC wrapped up their season with an impressive 3-1 win over newcomers Basake Holy Stars. Richard Tetteh put Aduana ahead, but Francis Obeng drew Holy Stars level. Second-half strikes from Emmanuel Marfo and Alex Boakye (pen) secured all three points.
Despite the defeat, Holy Stars survived relegation in their maiden Premier League season.
Dreams FC Crush Cities as Apostles Stay Up
Dreams FC ended the campaign on a high, dismantling already-relegated Legon Cities 4-1. Jonathan Nemorden scored twice, with Joseph Esso and Suraj Seidu adding their names to the scoresheet. Albert Adomah’s goal was merely a consolation for the Royals.
Elsewhere, Bechem United edged Young Apostles 1-0 at the Nana Gyeabour Park courtesy of a second-half penalty from Baba Moro Abdulai. Despite the loss, the Apostles did just enough to retain their top-flight status after an encouraging debut campaign.
