Dominic Oduro, a seasoned figure in Major League Soccer (MLS), is optimistic about the influx of Ghanaian talent into the league, following Joseph Painstil’s recent move.
Painstil, 26, made the switch to Los Angeles Galaxy from Belgian powerhouse KRC Genk, sparking discussions among fans about his decision to join the MLS at the peak of his career.
However, Oduro, who amassed over a decade of experience in the MLS with various clubs, including former champions Columbus Crew, believes the league has undergone significant improvements. He notes that players are now transitioning from the American league to Europe as well.
As the record Ghanaian goal-scorer in the MLS with 63 goals in 345 matches, Oduro advises players to seize the opportunity to join the MLS.
“It’s a positive move. I hope more Ghanaian players will consider coming to the league. Contrary to popular belief, it’s not a step down. The MLS is evolving and improving,” he remarked in an interview with 3 Sports.
“Give it a shot? Why not. The league is good. You don’t always have to play in Europe. You can progress from playing in the MLS to going to Europe. It has been done and if you are good they will see you. Give it a shot and use it as a platform to boost your career,” he added.
Oduro highlighted the success story of Miguel Almiron, who transitioned from the MLS to Europe and has become a pivotal player for Newcastle United in the English Premier League.
Having made a solitary appearance for Ghana in 2012 before retiring from international football in 2019, Oduro speaks from a wealth of experience, urging Ghanaian players to consider the MLS as a viable career path.
