Ernest Poku, the promising Dutch-born Ghanaian footballer, showcased his skills by netting a goal during Jong AZ Alkmaar’s clash with FC Groningen in the Eerste Divisie.
It all unfolded in the 14th minute when Kees Smit skillfully delivered the ball to Poku on the left wing. The nimble attacker embarked on a solo journey, skillfully maneuvering past two defenders before unleashing a precise strike into the far corner of the net.
However, Jong AZ’s fortune took a downturn in the 22nd minute when Johan Hove capitalized on a flank cross, scoring at the far post and leveling the game at 1-1. The tide further turned against them as Groningen gained momentum.
In a critical turn of events, the referee signaled a penalty for a handball committed by Jong AZ. Romano Postema stepped up and successfully converted the penalty, securing a 2-1 lead for Groningen.
Despite Jong AZ’s relentless pursuit for an equalizer after the halftime break, their efforts were thwarted as the opposing team netted the fourth goal. In the 61st minute, Postema showcased his prowess once again, stylishly finding the back of Jong AZ’s net, extending the lead to 3-1.
The Pride of the North, undeterred, managed to salvage a goal in the 70th minute. Thomas van Bergen seized an opportunity, scoring to make it 4-1, providing a glimmer of hope amidst the challenging match.
