Ghana and Nigeria, longtime rivals in West African football, are poised to reignite their rivalry in an international friendly at the Grande de Stade Marrakech in Morocco on Friday, March 22, 2024. This match comes forty-one days after the Africa Cup of Nations held in Cote D’Ivoire.
The upcoming clash marks the first meeting between the two nations since the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 play-off in March 2022, where Ghana advanced to the World Cup following a 1-1 draw against Nigeria in Abuja and a goalless draw at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium. Despite both countries experiencing heartbreak at the recent Africa Cup of Nations, with Nigeria losing the final to hosts Cote D’Ivoire and Ghana exiting in the group stage, changes have ensued in their coaching staff.
Ghana saw the departure of Chris Hughton and the subsequent appointment of former Ghanaian star Otto Addo on a long-term contract. Nigeria, on the other hand, welcomed former midfielder Finidi George as head coach, succeeding the departed Jose Peseiro.
Ahead of the friendly, Ghana’s Otto Addo is focused on rebuilding the squad following recent disappointments in the Africa Cup of Nations and the World Cup. Despite key absences, including Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey, Addo has enlisted promising talents such as Francis Abu, Forson Amankwaa, and Tariq Lamptey, among others, for selection.
Meanwhile, Nigeria faces a setback with Victor Osimhen sidelined due to an inflammation of an old injury. Additionally, players like Taiwo Awoniyi, Tyronne Awonyi, and Gabriel Osho are set to miss the game.
In summary, the stage is set for a thrilling encounter as both Ghana and Nigeria aim to bounce back from their recent setbacks and showcase their strengths on the international stage.
