Ghana could soon lose Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah to England after the player was named in the English U-21 squad for the U-21 Euro Qualifiers against Kosovo & Austria in September.
The 21-year-old currently plays for England at youth level, and the GFA have been in the news concerning a possible discussion for a nationality switch following a social media exchange after Arsenal beat Chelsea 2-1 to win the English FA Cup.
He was born in London to Ghanaian parents and reportedly turned down a first approach to play for the Black Stars in 2019 ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).
Aside from Arsenal’s Nketiah and Brighton and Hove Albion’s Lamptey, Akonnor has also targeted the Belgium-born and Anderlecht duo of Jeremy Doku and Francis Amuzu, Dutch-born brothers Derrick Luckassen (also of Anderlecht) and Samuel Brobbey (Ajax) and the French-born trio of Elisha Owusu (Gent), Enoch Kwateng (Bordeaux) and Alexander Djiku (Strasbourg).
But Ghana lost on Tuesday 25th August 2020 lost Jeremy Doku to Belgium after the Anderlecht young speedster was handed his first Belgium senior national team call-up for their Euro League game against Iceland next month.
Nketiah was named in the squad alongside his Arsenal teammate Bukayo Saka who is also being chased by Nigeria to represent them at the senior national level.
