Accra Lions have been officially relegated from the Ghana Premier League following a 2-0 home loss to Dreams FC at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday.
Despite a promising start to the match, the Lions were undone by second-half goals from Razak Salifu and substitute Aziz Musibau, ending their hopes of survival in the top flight.
The hosts dominated much of the first half, creating several clear chances. Lucky Nwafor came close to opening the scoring when his powerful header struck the crossbar after connecting with a cross from Fuzy Taylor. Soon after, Edmund Amakye tested Dreams FC goalkeeper Osmanu Wahabu with a fierce left-footed strike, but the shot was well saved.
Dreams FC also had their moments in the opening half. Former Hearts of Oak attacker Joseph Esso narrowly missed the target with a long-range effort, while Lawrence Setordjie almost beat Wahabu with a lob, only for the goalkeeper to tip the ball over the bar.
The deadlock was broken early in the second half when Salifu capitalized on a mix-up between Lions’ defenders Richard Agyen and Musa Hamzata, calmly finishing to give Dreams the lead.
Accra Lions nearly responded moments later when Yao Sokpoli’s effort struck the woodwork again, denying them a quick equalizer.
Dreams introduced U20 talent Aziz Musibau in the latter stages of the game, and the youngster made an instant impact. With just six minutes remaining, he latched onto a precise through ball and coolly slotted past goalkeeper Daniel Afful to seal the win.
Accra Lions pushed forward in the dying minutes, with Ahmed Yousif coming close to finding the net, but it wasn’t enough to change their fate.
The result confirms Accra Lions’ relegation to the Division One League, ending their stay in the top division. Despite showing flashes of brilliance, their inability to convert chances ultimately cost them their place in the Ghana Premier League.
