Former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), George Akwasi Afriyie has said that the Black Stars are likely to end their AFCON title drought under Kurt Okraku’s administration.
Ghana have not won a major silverware on the continent since 1982.
The four-time African Champions since last conquering the continent in 1982, have come close to winning the country its fifth Afcon title on three occasions but lost in the finals in 1992, 2010 and 2015.
The team last Sunday booked qualification for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations Cup tournament after amassing thirteen (13) points from six (6) qualifying games.
Despite topping Group C to qualify to Cameroon next year for a ninth successive time, Ghanaians have cast doubt about the chances of CK Akonnor’s side winning the prestigious trophy.
However, George Afriyie, says the Black Stars could change their luck by returning from Cameroon with the coveted trophy.
Speaking in an interview with Nhyira FM, he said “We have not been able to win the Afcon from 2008. I will attribute it to sheer luck. In 2010 and 2015 it was just not for us in that era,”
Although Afriyie admits the Black Stars can’t not boast of a strong team compared to some years ago, he strongly believes luck could help the team to finally win Ghana its fifth Cup of Nations title under the current Ghana Football Association’s leadership.
“We may win it under this Kurt Okraku’s management where the perception is we have a poor team which is not in the best of shape as compared to years before” the former Black Stars management Committee chairman added.
