Ghana and Toulouse midfielder Francis Abu has successfully undergone surgery after suffering a terrible injury during the Black Stars’ friendly match against Japan on Friday in the 2025 Kirin Challenge Cup.
The 24-year-old midfielder fractured two bones in his leg in the second half of Ghana’s 2–0 defeat. He was immediately stretchered off the pitch in severe pain, causing huge concern among fans, teammates, and the football community.
The surgery took place in Japan, and according to the Ghana Football Association (GFA), the operation was successful and the first stage of his recovery has already begun.
The GFA released a statement confirming this positive update:
“Following the incident during the game between Ghana and Japan, where Abu Francis suffered a fracture of two bones, the Ghana Football Association… is happy to inform the public that Francis Abu has successfully undergone surgery, and the acute phase of his rehabilitation has commenced.”
A physiotherapist will remain with Abu in Japan to support his early rehabilitation. The GFA is also arranging for a senior technical team member to travel with him back to France once he is discharged from the Toyota Memorial Hospital, where the surgery was carried out.
The statement added:
“We are grateful to everyone who supported us in this journey… and we will continue to count on their support during the rehabilitation process as we work to ensure the player returns to full fitness.”
Francis Abu is considered one of Ghana’s most promising young midfielders, and both club and country are hopeful he will return even stronger after his rehabilitation.
