Former Asante Kotoko and Black Stars defender Emmanuel Ampiah has cast doubt on the current Kotoko squad’s ability to secure the Ghana Premier League title this season.
The ex-Kotoko stalwart, who was a key part of the club’s dominant teams in the past, believes the current side lacks the consistency and mentality needed to sustain a title challenge.
Speaking in an interview with Tony Muntana on Kessben TV, Ampiah was candid about his concerns, stating that unlike during his playing days, he cannot confidently back Kotoko to win the league.
“You can’t trust the current Kotoko,” Ampiah remarked. “During our time, when Kotoko went on top of the league, no team could overtake us. We had a strong mentality and belief that once we led, we would stay there until the end. But right now, I can’t say the same thing about this team.”
During Ampiah’s era, Kotoko was a dominant force in Ghanaian football, consistently winning league titles and competing strongly in Africa. Their success was built on tactical discipline, resilience, and an unshakable winning mentality—qualities he believes are lacking in the current squad.
“There are too many inconsistencies,” Ampiah continued. “One week, they win; the next, they lose or draw. That wasn’t the case with us. We knew what it took to win, and we did it consistently.”
Despite currently being in the title race, Kotoko has struggled with inconsistent performances, leading to frustrations among fans who are eager to see the club return to its dominant past. With the league entering a crucial phase, it remains to be seen whether Kotoko can prove Ampiah wrong and reclaim their status as champions.
