Ghanaian teen sensation Jimmy Appiah has signed his first-ever professional contract with Charlton Athletic ahead of the 2021/22 season after doing so well with the Club’s U18 side.
The budding midfielder has been handed his first professional contract at the club to continue his development as he hopes to become the next Kante in world football.
“I’m very pleased first of all in terms of the U23 group that the majority have either been offered a new contract or were retained within their option, so that’s all been tidied up. Then we’ve got 10 existing scholars that are going to go into that first-year pro group,” said the club’s Academy manager Steve Avory.
“We already had Charlie Barker, Euan Williams and Aaron Henry on professional contracts, and now have Naz Bakrin, Jimmy Appiah, Jeremy Santos, Richard Chin, Terrell Agyemang, Dylan Gavin and Mason Burstow. So there’s actually 12 first year professionals – I think it’s the highest number of first year professionals we’ve ever had. It’s going to be a young U23 group but we feel lots of potential there, an exciting group.”
Appiah signed the contract alongside his countryman Tarelll Agyemang.
I’ve been at this great club for about 5 seasons now and I’ve loved every step of the journey. I am very passionate about the game. I consider myself as a holding midfielder who sits and protects the backline and tidies things up across the pitch just like N’Golo Kanté. My playing style is very similar to Kanté and I’ve been compared to him because of my size & stature too.” Appiah said in an interview last year.
