COLCHESTER United are set to benefit financially after their former winger Kwame Poku joined Championship side Queens Park Rangers.
The 23-year-old has signed for QPR from League One side Peterborough United for an undisclosed fee.
And with Colchester having ensured sell-on clauses were inserted into the ‘substantial six-figure fee’ – believed to be in the region of £250,000 – they were paid by Posh for the winger back in 2021, they are set to receive a segment of the money the League One club make from Poku’s departure.
Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony said: “I am delighted that Kwame has decided to join a club whereby the football club secured a solid transfer fee and a fantastic sell-on clause to continue to share financially in his success in going to the top. We wish Kwame and his family nothing but the best for the future.”
For Poku, it is an exciting move into the Championship, after he turned down several other clubs to join QPR.
Poku told the QPR website: “I feel like the project they’re building here excites me and I want to be part of taking QPR to that next level.
“There’s good players here and I think it’s exciting times for the club.”
Poku will be playing under new QPR head coach Julien Stéphan, at Loftus Road.
“When I was speaking to him he was talking about where he sees me fitting in and where he thinks I can influence the game,” said Poku, who has made more than 220 professional app”earances.
“That’s what really attracted me. Being 23 turning 24, I’m not quite young anymore so I want to come in and make my mark from the jump.”
After initially joining their academy, Poku spent two years with Colchester between 2019 and 2021.
He played 75 times for the U’s, scoring six goals, before leaving them to join Peterborough.
Poku feels his time at the U’s along with the four-year spell he had with Posh played a vital role in his development.
He said: “I think it was a journey that needed to happen to get me to this stage right now.
