Ghanaian defender Baba Rahman says he has grown stronger in dealing with criticism from fans and is hopeful of making a return to the national team after more than a year away.
The experienced left-back, who had an impressive season with Greek club PAOK—both domestically and in Europe—remains in contact with the Black Stars technical team and is preparing himself for a potential comeback.
Speaking to Joy Sports, Rahman addressed the fan jeers that followed Ghana’s 2-1 win over the Central African Republic in a 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier—his last appearance for the national team.
“The boos didn’t affect me during the game; as a professional, you learn to deal with those things,” he said. “But after the match, on the way to the team bus, it really sank in. We had just secured a win, so I was expecting support—not continued jeers. That was tough to take.”
Since that incident in September 2023, Rahman has opted out of national team call-ups, including for the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast. He cited a focus on club football as the main reason, a stance he has maintained in recent months.
Despite turning down several invitations, the former Chelsea defender has continued to shine for PAOK, recording five goals and three assists in 29 Greek Super League matches, along with two goals in 12 appearances in European competitions.
Rahman was recently linked to a return during the Unity Cup in London, but he clarified that while he did visit the team’s hotel, it was only to greet the squad—not to participate.
“I’ll be back soon, God willing,” he said. “I’ve been in regular touch with the coach. Unfortunately, each international window has come with some fitness concerns, but I’m working hard and preparing myself.”
Rahman’s message reflects a player who has matured through adversity and remains committed to contributing to Ghana’s national team when the time is right.
