Renowned Ghanaian striker Asamoah Gyan has endorsed Nigerian forward Victor Osimhen as a strong contender for the 2023 African Player of the Year accolade.
Osimhen has had a notably successful season on the club front, playing a pivotal role in Napoli’s triumph to secure their first Serie A title in 33 years. His remarkable performance in Italy was further highlighted by his achievement of clinching the Golden Boot Award with 26 goals netted during the previous season.
During an interview with Nigeria’s Brilla FM, Gyan expressed his conviction that Osimhen’s remarkable achievements should not go unnoticed, establishing a solid basis for him to merit the 2023 African Player of the Year award.
Gyan stated, “For me, he deserves it. As a striker and seeing what he is doing, for the first time in over 30 years, winning the league with Napoli. He deserves it,” Gyan told Brilla FM.
The announcement of the new recipient of the award by the Confederation of African Football is scheduled for later in the year.
In 2022, Sadio Mane secured the African Player of the Year title. The former Liverpool player led Senegal to victory in the Africa Cup of Nations and additionally claimed domestic honors in England.
