Former Ghanaian captain Asamoah Gyan has thrown his support behind the appointment of John Paintsil as an assistant coach of the Black Stars.
In March, Ghana’s head coach, Otto Addo, announced the appointment of Joseph Laumann, John Paintsil, and Fatau Dauda as his assistants. While some Ghanaians welcomed the move, others questioned Paintsil’s suitability for the role.
Speaking on Asempa FM on Wednesday, April 3, Gyan affirmed that Paintsil was deserving of the position, citing his dedication and experience.
‘John (Paintsil) sacrificed a lot for the national team but people seem to forget. After retirement, he went to coach in South Africa as an assistant and gathered relevant experience.’’
“If you look at his life after retirement, all he’s done is coaching. So if I look at his records and what he has done, I can only support his appointment to the assistant’s role,’’ Gyan added.
Paintsil, who played for the Black Stars from 2001 to 2013, shared the dressing room with Gyan for a decade, from 2003 to 2013.
During Gyan’s captaincy of the Ghana team from 2013 to 2019, Paintsil’s experience and commitment were evident, further solidifying Gyan’s endorsement of his former teammate’s coaching role with the national team.
