Schalke 04 midfielder Christopher Antwi-Adjei was subjected to racist abuse during his side’s DFB-Pokal first-round tie against FC Lokomotive Leipzig on Sunday, August 17, 2025.
The incident occurred in the 13th minute when the Ghanaian international went to the touchline to take a throw-in and was targeted with racist remarks from a home supporter. Antwi-Adjei immediately reported the abuse to the referee, prompting a temporary stoppage so that a stadium announcement could be made.
However, instead of condemning the incident, sections of the home crowd responded by booing Antwi-Adjei each time he touched the ball until the final whistle — a reaction Schalke later described as “utterly incomprehensible and deeply disappointing.”
Following the match, the 31-year-old reported the matter to the police, who have since opened investigations into the incident.
Speaking after the game, Antwi-Adjei expressed his frustration:
“It’s very disappointing to have to experience something like this in this day and age. It’s not acceptable. I hope this person reflects on their actions.”
The incident has drawn widespread condemnation, with growing calls for stricter measures against racism in German football.
