Former Ghana international footballer Anthony Baffoe is 56 years old today and he is currently the Deputy General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football.
Born in Bad Godesberg, Bonn, West Germany on 25th May 1965 , defender Baffoe did not have a stellar football career as the likes of Sammy Osei Kuffour at Bayern Munich but is one of the most respected personalities in the African game post-professional career and his current CAF portfolio is a clear evidence.
But what is Anthony Baffoe easily remembered for at the 1992 AFCON in Senegal?
It surely has to be his penalty miss on second attempt that eventually handed the trophy to Ivory Coast.
As captain of Ghana in the final match as Abedi Pele was suspended, Baffoe led his teammates against the Ivorians and after 120 minutes without a winner, the two countries needed to be separated on penalties.
The German-born Ghanaian scored Ghana’s first kick and after a marathon penalty shootouts that saw all eligible players take a kick, Baffoe needed to shoot from the spot again but he was unfortunate to miss the target this time as the Ivorians went ahead to win the trophy.
Anthony Baffoe was indeed the only Black Stars player to take two kicks and as he missed the second one, the other players did not have the opportunity for a second one.
