Kwame Bonsu joined Esperance de Tunis from Asante Kotoko last year following his good performances in the 2018/19 CAF Confederation Cup reaching the group stages and now he is closer to winning the 2019/20 Tunisia league title with the Demons of Africa.
The Ghanaian midfielder has appeared in 21 games across all events this season and he missed some games due to injury.
Bonsu came off the bench in Saturday’s 2-1 home win against Stade Tunisien as Esperance continue their lead at the summit of the league standings with 53 points.
Second-place Sfaxien are on 43 points meaning the team of Kwamw Bonsu needs six points in their next games which will guarantee them their 30th league title.
The transfer of the former Gefle IF player from Kotoko to the Tunisian giants was without controversy.
After agreeing a 150 000 USD deal , Kotoko did not receive the transfer fee from Esperance who withheld the amount because the Porcupine Warriors were indebted after the latter signed their former Ghanaian player Emmanuel Clottey who had a running contract.
Kotoko and Esperance finally came to a compromise after FIFA stepped in again to deliver a ruling ordering Kotoko to pay 180 000 USD as compensation to Esperance.
“Finally, in compliance with paragraph 3 of the FIFA DISCO decision of 9th April, 2020, Kotoko on 20th April, 2020 also paid the CHF15,000 ($15,525) fine imposed into the FIFA dollar account,” a statement from Close Marking Consult explained.
“In response to Kotoko’s proposal of 11th April, Esperance on the 12th April, 2020, in the spirit of sportsmanship, and the desire to keep a healthy relationship between the two clubs, agreed to waive and or forfeit five per cent interest per annum from July 2015, the FIFA decision of 9th April, 2020 notwithstanding.
“From the foregoing, both parties forfeit transfer and interest rights and benefits in cases NR 2000162 (Bonsu) and 200369 (Clottey) respectively,” it stressed.
After all these controversies, Bonsu is set to lift the Tunisian championship trophy with Esperance to prove why they needed to sign him.
