Dr. Nsiah Asare – the Advisor to the President of Ghana on Health matters – revealed on Wednesday as reported by SportsWorldGhana.com that competitive football will not resume in the country until September and this means the current season is difficult to be completed before the 2020/21 season commences as expected.
“I am a supporter of Kumasi Asante Kotoko myself and have been going to the stadium to watch their matches. It is possible football resumes in September” Dr. Nsiah Asare told Kumasi-based Fox FM.
There are 173 more games to be played in the current Premier League season as 133 have been honored and completed already at the end of Week 15 on March 14th and 15th. Fourteen clubs including leaders Aduana Stars have 19 games each to be played to close the season whilst four clubs namely Hearts of Oak, Asante Kotoko, Inter Allies and King Faisal have 20 games to play.
Should the season even resume in September as predicted by Dr. Nsiah Asare and scheduled to end in November- it is not possible for the remaining 173 league games to be honored and completed for the next season of 2020/21 to start earlier towards the end of the year and run into 2021 to finish as was the case for the current campaign which started in December 2019 unless the GFA intends to delay the start of the 2020/21 season until next year.
By that approach, the current season can go on to complete in four months from September to December. Another way to finish the current competition as early as possible is for matches to be played everyday as seen in the Spanish , German and Premier Leagues but it is unlikely the GFA will consider this method.
Most leagues around the world that have resumed or canceled their current season due to the Covid-19 will be starting the next season in the second week of September or October this year but the Ghana Football Association is yet to decide as the body awaits the government of Ghana to ease restriction on sporting events.
