Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan maintains that missing a crucial penalty at the 2010 FIFA World Cup still haunts him.
According to Ghana’s all-time top scorer, that game against Uruguay in South Africa has always given him nightmares.
“The last-gasp penalty against Uruguay still haunts me and I couldn’t sleep all night”, Gyan told TV3.
“It was a disaster, it was crazy. I couldn’t sleep all night and all I was telling myself was to get another chance because I knew I could redeem myself even if not football, and something else,” the former Sunderland striker added.
Gyan, 35, with 51 international goals further disclosed how hard he cried the whole night till the morning.
“I cried the whole night till the next morning and in the morning I was calm because I couldn’t cry anymore”, he added.
Gyan, however, believes he can still in the furture redeem himself to make amends for the missed penalty that ended Ghana’s dream of becoming the first African country to play in the last four of FIFA’s elite competition.
“I still hope I can make amends but if even I am unable to, I hope my children would be able to make amends”, he noted.
Asamoah Gyan is currently Ghana’s all-time top scorer with 51 goals from 109 appearances.
He is also the African player with most goals at the FIFA Mundial with six goals in three different World Cups.
