Asante Kotoko head coach Karim Zito has revealed that the club’s primary objective in the upcoming CAF Confederation Cup is to reach the group stage, as they return to continental football following their FA Cup triumph.
The Porcupine Warriors secured qualification for Africa’s second-tier club competition after beating lower-tier side Golden Kick FC 2-1 in the 2024/25 MTN FA Cup final on Sunday at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium. The victory marked Kotoko’s 10th FA Cup title in the club’s illustrious history.
Kwame Opoku emerged as the match-winner, heading in the opener in the 17th minute and converting a late penalty in the 89th to hand Kotoko a dramatic win.
Speaking to Peace FM after the final, Coach Zito outlined Kotoko’s preparations and aspirations for their continental campaign.
“Kotoko has a lot of programs. On the 6th [of July], we’re playing Hearts of Oak, and then we’ll also travel to South Africa to participate in a tournament,” Zito said.
“You can see how packed our schedule will be, and it’s all part of preparations for the CAF Confederation Cup. We’ll do our best to qualify for the group stage—that’s our main goal.”
Kotoko have not progressed beyond the preliminary rounds in recent continental campaigns, and Zito is determined to lead the club to a more successful outing this time around.
