Tensions ran high in the Black Stars camp following their 2-0 defeat to Sudan in Benghazi, with teammates having to separate Jordan Ayew and goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi to prevent a physical altercation.
The incident reportedly took place in the locker room immediately after the match, as frustrations mounted over Ghana’s disappointing performance in the crucial Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier.
The West African giants, currently struggling to secure a spot in the 2025 AFCON tournament, saw their hopes further dented by the defeat, leaving them third in Group F with just two points. Sudan capitalized on defensive errors to score two quick second-half goals, leaving the Black Stars on the verge of missing the continental event for the first time in two decades.
According to sources, Ayew, visibly upset after the match, exchanged words with Ati Zigi over the team’s performance, which quickly escalated into a heated confrontation. The situation was diffused by fellow players before it could turn physical, highlighting the growing pressure within the squad as they face the possibility of failing to qualify.
Ghana now faces a daunting task, needing to win their remaining qualifiers against Angola and Niger in November while hoping for favorable results elsewhere.
