Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif has announced that the construction at the Sekondi Essipong Stadium has progressed to the roofing stage.
This update comes in response to videos circulating on social media that show the stadium, which hosted the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations, in a state of further disrepair.
The stadium has suffered from poor maintenance over the years, making it unusable for local clubs.
During a press conference on Wednesday, Mustapha Ussif shared, “We have very good news for you on the Essipong Stadium. As we speak, the contractor is roofing the Essipong Stadium.”
He emphasized that construction work has been ongoing, adding, “We told you from the beginning that work was ongoing. And we all know because some of us, we decided to go and do finance. We are not experts when it comes to construction.”
Ussif also pointed out the challenges faced during the process, explaining, “But the little we know is that while you are doing construction, there is no way the place will look neat until you finish. We told you that they were blasting because a lot of the metals that were used were a bit damaged.”
